When the Bat For Lashes singer-songwriter Natasha Khan makes a piece of art, she considers it her child. To extend that metaphor, the process of creativity itself is like a birth. Whether it’s writing one of her songs or drawing the artwork for her tarot card deck, Khan has found herself moving through 10 stages, from the gestation period to allowing your proverbial baby to leave the nest. Here, she shares those steps for you to work with as you imagine your next project.

Natasha Khan is an English singer, songwriter, producer and artist, now living in Los Angeles. She has released six studio albums as the experimental indie-pop project Bat For Lashes, for which she has received three Mercury Prize nominations. On the side, she is the vocalist for Sexwitch, a collaboration with the band Toy and producer Dan Carey. As a visual artist, she directed and wrote the 2016 short film “Madly” and most recently, she created a tarot deck called “Motherwitch,” which acts as a tool for the creative process.

Manifesto is a series on WePresent which invites activists and creatives with something to say to write 10 rules to live by, in order to help spread their message. The artwork on this page was created by Julia Soboleva.
