WePresent has collaborated with Sierra Leonean artist Julianknxx on his multimedia film installation “Chorus in Rememory of Flight.” For this piece of work, the artist traveled around Europe, exploring largely untold stories of Black and African diasporic realities and collaborating with local musicians and choirs. You can see the project for yourself in The Curve gallery at the Barbican, London, between September and February.
Chorus in Rememory of Flight has been co-commissioned by the Barbican and WePresent by WeTransfer in partnership with Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
The Artist
Sierra Leonian artist Julianknxx uses his personal history as a prism to deconstruct dominant perspectives on African art, history, and culture. His work conveys the Black experience of defining and redefining the self, rejecting labels to form new collective narratives.
The Project
Stories of Black history that reach the limelight rarely take us beyond Britain and America; this is something Julian Knox, known professionally as Julianknxx, is determined to change. “Chorus in Rememory of Flight” is centered around Knox’s travels around European cities such as Amsterdam, Berlin, and Barcelona and Marseille, as he searches for Black stories that we, the viewer, might not otherwise have heard. Julian brings choirs, musicians, and voices from across these cities together as one, through an immersive multimedia film installation.
