Honoring our creative community in London, this first ever Stuff They Don't Tell You: Live is all about financing your magazine—from saying yay or nay to advertising to managing timelines (and stress levels). Joining us are a panel of publishing legends, including Zena Alkayat, founder of Bloom; David McKendrick, founder of Paperboy; and Jeremy Leslie, founder of magCulture.
The Speakers
Zena Alkayat, founder and publisher Bloom
A journalist by trade, Zena Alkayat is the founder of independent publishing house Bloom, which exists to empower all people to find joy in nature for better wellbeing and a stronger planet. Bloom publishes a modern magazine, books, and stationery for gardeners, plant admirers, and outdoor explorers. Before launching Bloom back in 2018, Zena was a journalist at Metro and Time Out London, moving on to become a commissioning editor of trend-led lifestyle books at companies including Quarto, Hardie Grant, and Hachette.
Jeremy Leslie, founder magCulture
Jeremy Leslie has worked with publications for over 35 years. For the past 16 years, he has run magCulture, a key source of news and opinion covering editorial creativity and the ongoing thrill of print. magCulture posts regular reviews online, runs annual conferences in London and New York, sells magazines from its London shop and online, and records a regular podcast. magCulture also works with a range of international clients to develop their publishing programs. A magazine veteran, Jeremy is a recipient of the BSME’s prestigious Mark Boxer award for services to the publishing industry.
David McKendrick, founder Paperboy
David is the founder and creative director of London-based creative agency, David McKendrick Studio. Before this he co-founded BAM, an art direction agency specialized in art direction for fashion, music, art and culture.
The Series
There are lots of things for creatives to think about beyond having good ideas. And while industry events tend to cover the high-end, sexy topics—from unrealistic routines for creative inspiration to (even more unrealistic) dream client relationships—we tend to forget about the nitty-gritty and the down-and-dirty. Whether it’s how to get your invoices paid on time or whether you should be copyrighting your work.
That’s where we come in.
Inspired by the WePresent series of the same name, Stuff They Don’t Tell You: Live presents four intimate events across Amsterdam, Berlin and London, where we (alongside a panel of experts) tackle the practical questions that usually go unanswered. So you can get the insider tidbits you need to succeed in a creative career.
