Described as the UK’s foremost narrative ballet company, Northern Ballet strives to tell unexpected stories through its mastery of classical dance and music. In 2016, choreographer Jonathan Watkins led the ballet in a performance of George Orwell’s “1984,” adapting the linchpin novel into an atmospheric performance piece. The work was picked up by The Space, an agency that promotes digital engagement across the arts and cultural sector, who worked with director Ross MacGibbon to produce a full-length film of Jonathan’s creation. The film in its entirety was available to stream on WeTransfer, and we spoke to the choreographer about his creative process.
