Rico X. is an acclaimed Dubai-based, London-born self-taught photographer. His projects share a common thread, documenting Black and Brown communities, an attempt, he says, to redress how the photographic gaze has depicted such figures throughout the history of photography. He’s also part of Kamoinge, the legendary Black photography collective, as one of the first non-US-based members. Through this, he gets to learn from the likes of Magnum Photos member Eli Reed, as well as Jamel Shabazz, Lola Flash and Adger Cowans. We featured his project “Who Left the Bloody Lights On,” in which he photographs the world’s cities from the sky while working as an airline pilot.
