Working at the crossroads of art, science, and technology, Refik Anadol creates mesmerizing three-dimensional artworks using machine intelligence. After completing a residency at Google’s Artist and Machine Intelligence Program, Refik developed a keen interest in everything from physics to neuroscience. He started his studio in 2014, and has since created a series of immersive installations and data sculptures in a variety of digital and physical forms. His work brings entire buildings to life, casting floors, walls, and ceilings into infinity and using new perspectives to play tricks on the human eye. While aesthetically breathtaking, projects like “Quantum Memories” (made in collaboration with Google’s Quantum AI team) and “Machine Memoirs” (a collaboration with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory), investigate the challenges, and the possibilities, that modern computing has imposed on the world. Many of Refik’s projects are in public spaces, and he’s had installations in places as wide-ranging as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the LINQ Hotel in Las Vegas, and the Venice Architecture Biennale—where he built a 3D data sculpture envisioning the architecture of the human brain.
