Jemila Isa is a self-taught British artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, animation, and installation. Isa grew up in London in a dual faith household; her “hardcore” Christian mother would take the Isa children to church every Sunday without fail. But growing up with Islam from her father’s side allowed the young artist to be critical of both religions whilst maintaining reverence and admiration for them too. Now, much of her work explores the complex role of faith and the church in the lives of women in West Africa and across the diaspora.
