Hussein Shikha is an Iraqi artist and researcher whose work engages with complex symbologies that reflect his heritage and family history through equally complex pixel drawings.
When the power went out in Iraqi artist Hussein Shikha’s childhood home, it was the detailed carpets on the floor—filled with characters and stories—that took the place of the TV screen. Now, he uses tapestry, digital animation and interactive installations to bring abstract and fantastical ideas into conversation with traditional Islamic art, telling stories inspired by Islamic texts and Iraqi history. He holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and an Advanced Master’s degree of Research in Art and Design at Sint Lucas Antwerp.
