Guillaume Herbaut is a French photographer based in Paris, and has been a member of Agence VU’ since 2021. His work has often focused on historical places that are steeped in symbolism and communal memory, and it was a trip to Chernobyl in 2001 that unlocked a fascination with Ukraine, a country he’s been continuously photographing ever since. We interviewed Guillaume as part of our annual collaboration with the World Press Photo contest, for which he was a winner in the Long-Term Projects category of the European region in 2022. It was his 21-year-long coverage of Ukraine’s wars, revolutions and recoveries which caught World Press Photo’s eye, and which we spoke to him about.
