Elisabeth Sutherland transforms traditional folklore and beliefs from her native Ghana into expressive performative works, ranging from dance and theater to praise poetry and large-scale art installations. She is also the founder of the cultural hub Terra Alta and Accra Theatre Workshop—grassroots organizations that share and celebrate local arts and heritage. In 2019, WePresent dove into Elisabeth’s emotional and experimental practice in a short film titled “Okyeame.” Directed by Caroline Spearpoint and Miriam Thom of FoxWolf Productions, the film explores the depths of Elisabeth’s practice and charts the ways in which she imbues traditional folklore and beliefs into her work – whether it be in dance, poetry or installation.
