Sudanese-American singer Dua Saleh bridges diverse storytelling traditions—from slam poetry and theater to recitations of Arabic poetry and gospel music—in genre-defying pop music. Their incisive lyrics explore narratives of identity and sexuality, while their seductive, considered stage presence makes them a captivating performer. Dua first emerged in 2019, with their acclaimed debut EP “Nūr.” WePresent caught up with Dua in 2021 to discuss their follow-up album, “ROSETTA,” which imagines a relationship between legendary Black rock and roll musician Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the pianist Marie Knight.
