When Shanghai-born, Chicago-based artist Chengan Xia left China for the first time, he finally had the opportunity to see his home country’s culture from an outsider’s perspective. The realisations made since then—about national identity, and how it’s impacted by visual propaganda—have formed the basis for his work. A mixture of installation, video art, collage, poster and graphic design, his visually explosive works fill any space they're shown in, and ask us to think about the place we’re from, and what impact it’s had on our lives.
