Documentary photographer Alexey Vasilyev was born and raised in the remote Russian town of Yakutsk, in the country’s coldest region of Yakutia. His work focuses on the day-to-day lives of people in the far North, and how the national identity of the town is portrayed globally. In 2017, he became a laureate of the Young Photographers of Russia award and in 2018 he was one of the finalists of the sports category of the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest. As part of our annual collaboration with World Press Photo, we featured Alexey’s project “Sakhawood” which documents Yakutia’s blossoming film industry. His work has been featured in National Geographic (Russia), Calvert Journal, It's Nice That and Takie Dela (Russia).
